Freelance Photographer's Guidelines:
- Bird Watcher's Digest
- Bird Watcher's Digest (BWD) magazine has been publishing beautiful bird photography for nearly 30 years. Bird Watcher's Digest relies on bird photographers with large, active image libraries to supply the bulk of each issue's photographs. We solicit slides from a select group of these photographers through our bimonthly photo want list. Our payment schedule is $75 per image used regardless of size. Images re-used on our table of contents page or on our web site will be paid an additional $25.

- American Forests Magazine
- American Forests is a quarterly national magazine with stories and photographs about trees, forests, and forestry issues. The mission of our publication is to foster appreciation for trees and forests and to offer a responsible, science-based discussion of the trends, issues, policies, and management of America's forest resources. American Forests accepts professional photos for review. Also, many authors shoot photos to illustrate their articles. These photographs should be related to the article and must be clear and sharp.

- BAY NATURE is a quarterly magazine dedicated to the intelligent and joyful exploration of the natural places, plants, and wildlife of the San Francisco Bay Area. It contains writing, photography, art, and cartography about the natural history of the land and waters of the nine counties ringing the Bay, as well as significant nearby areas. Each issue of BAY NATURE contains both features and recurring departments and columns; most of these are accompanied by photography and/or artwork. From time to time, we will also publish photo spreads or essays with minimal text. Almost all photographic content in BAY NATURE is provided by freelance contributors from stock images, for which we purchase one-time publication rights; we rarely do photography by assignment.

- BirdWatching (formerly Birder’s World) is a bimonthly magazine for people with a broad interest in wild birds and birdwatching. Our readers are intellectually curious and well educated. Our payment schedule is $250 for a cover, $200 for a full two-page spread, $150 for a full page plus, $125 for a full page, $100 for less than a full page, $50 for a one-column photo based on a three-column page, and $50 for a cover inset. Payment is made upon signing a contractual agreement for one-time use of the photo.

- Montana Outdoors magazine is always seeking new talent and beautiful imagery, and photographers are welcome to submit photos for consideration. Pays up to $300/cover shot. The editors prefer to use images of animals photographed in the wild and will give preference to wild animal photos.

- National Parks magazine publishes articles about areas in the National Park System, proposed new areas, threats to parks or park wildlife, scientific discoveries, legislative issues, and endangered species of plants or animals relevant to national parks. While there will always be a need for pretty landscapes and wildlife, we're trying hard to connect the human experience to these issues. We welcome portrait photographers who can provide a different view of the parks as we normally see them through diverse human subjects, intimate black-and-white photography, and stunning compositions that include people in the landscape. Pays up to $750 for cover photo; and pays up to $350 for other photos.

- Sierra, the magazine of the Sierra Club, publishes photographs pertaining to the natural world and the environment. The magazine uses high-quality, mostly color transparencies of any format. The magazine normally uses existing work from freelance nature photographers rather than commissioning work or using staff photographers. Sierra purchases one-time publishing rights to photographs as they are needed to accompany specific articles. Photographers interested in submitting work to Sierra are encouraged to send a link to their Web site, along with a stock listing of regions and subjects of specialty for us to review.
