is it best to live in Europe when wanting to be a fashion photographer? how should i get started with my career after college?

You can be anywhere - every place has it's own distinct fashion culture, it just depends on where you want to situate yourself! I would think to get started you should start sending resumes to every fashion agency/designer/magazine that you can find, as well as putting together a really great portfolio. Include a sample or two of your best work with the resume, then call the companies and follow up.

Well Annette First of all -- stay out of Dallas, Tx and the work in and around the Apparel Mart there-- I would like for us to remain friends and I already have too many competitors as it is (haha) But, if you are thinking of the European markets-- get yourself braced for a fist fight-- these are essentially "old school markets" and even though they are extremely well paid jobs -- most of the people doing this work have had a corner on these markets for many years-- and they have hundreds of people barking at their heels-- waiting for them to die off so that there will be a chance for them somewhere !!! You would do much better for yourself and have a much easier intro into the works of this industry right here in the good ole U S A --- where there are several market areas to start in---- namely the markets centered around New York City---- Chicago --- Atlanta--- Los Angeles--- and ------ahhhhhhhh that other place that you really wouldn't be interested in ---because it is in a very hot climate and has an awful lot of "hicks" running around and ---ahhh---a lot of other reasons !!! The most successful beginnings here usually start with an apprentice position working with an established photographer-- and I know that being another photographer's gopher is not the most glamourous thing you can think of --- especially being college trained and all--- but believe me it is the best and quickest way IN !!! some europen cities would be good, but also new york. in europe i guess being in paris, milan or london would be good. its tough starting out trust me. just do lots of fashion photog in college and get together a great portfolio, with great models. contact photographers and see if they need assistants first. you can go to blackbook or workbook to look up photographers. know digital equipment and macs in and out, also photoshop knowledge is a huge plus. its tough, best of luck.
