Who has experience with food photography?

I'm in high school, and have a passion for photography, and I have a friend who does amazing web designs. We're thinking of starting a "freelance" web designing business, and we're going to try to redesign local restaurants' websites, starting for free. I was wondering if anyone has experience photographing for restaurant websites. Is there something I should remember/know? Any tips? Anything I should know for uploading them to websites?

Answer 1

Photographing food, is a daunting task. Always remember the food that looks the most appealing, usually isn't cooked all the way. Remember plating and choosing the style of plates is as important as the food. It sets the tone for the restaurant. Make the food look mouth watering. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+photograph+food&aq=f This is a link on how the food should look. Get photoshop elements and fix any imperfections. Make sure the plat and the food are basically the only things in the photo. Get a flash gallery application like wondershare and create a flash gallery.....the basic. You can alter it any way you would like. Good for you for taking such a great leap. All the best to you.

First of all, let's kill the "I have passion for photography". If you didn't you wouldn't be photographing in the first or trying to get into food photography. The "I'm so passionate about XYZ" is becoming insanely cliche. Secondly, do you have any skill and/or experience with food photography? This is vital if you intend on submitting your photography to restaurants. Not only will it be useful to know proper lighting, it also helps to know food styling. Check out these sites for some amazing food photography (and some not so amazing): www.foodgawker.com www.tastespotting.com www.foodbuzz.com Also look up Penny de los Santos. She is an amazing and inspiring photographer/food photographer. If your work doesn't match the caliber of most of those photographers/food bloggers, study it and learn it until you do. Also look up a book called Plate to Pixel by Helene Dujardin. Fantastic book and well worth the $30.
