Which type of lighting should be used for jewelry photography?

I am new in digital jewelry photography. What do you think, should I use heavy lighting or soft lighting while taking the pictures?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

It depends on what you are going for, but most people seem to prefer soft lighting. In fact, most people set up a light tent and put the jewelry inside. You can find light tents at B&H Photo and other sources.

Answer 2

There are techniques to take good jewelry pictures using a scanner. http://hubpages.com/hub/Photographing-Jewelry-with-a-Scanner But for using a camera, you would take time-delay pictures, of course and use a white light filtered through a light box that has white screens on the sides to get rid of shadows. Of course no flash. Incandescent bulbs make a reddish cast to all pictures so you need a white daylight bulb. If you have mixed lighting, like two different kinds of bulbs it will be impossible to do color correction with software photo editing. There are lightbox kits that can be ordered online. I got mine from Amazon.com for about $50. it is portable and folds up into a case, and comes with two white light, a tripod, and colored background cloths. There is also something called a "cloud dome". www,clouddome.com which is a nifty lighting kit you can buy.but more expensive than most light boxes.

Get a small light tent or make one. Use a decent macro lens. you can get a small light tent for under 100$ at most camera shops or you can make one for about 20$ if you feel like doing some arts and crafts and have a few lamps (preferably with adjustable necks) hanging around. "But for using a camera, you would take time-delay pictures" What? Do you mean shoot with the timer or long exposure or what? My suggestion is shoot as fast as you can with the light you have. You want to shoot fast to avoid any type of motion blurring the detail of the jewelry. "Incandescent bulbs make a reddish cast to all pictures so you need a white daylight bulb. If you have mixed lighting, like two different kinds of bulbs it will be impossible to do color correction with software photo editing." You don't need the bulbs to be daylight balanced ... you just need them to all have the same temperature and adjust your white balance accordingly. So either use all incandescents or all fluorescents ... just don't mix and match.

Answer 4

To capture the beauty of your jewelry, use soft lighting and shoot outside on an overcast day or use a light tent like EZcube, Cubelite, or use a soft box. http://jewelsstyle.com/category/digital-jewelry-photography/
