When you are a professional photographer any camera system you have been using can be used in any field of photography, scientific, fashion, magazine, news, sports, portrait, wedding, etc. I shoot a lot of fashion. I use Nikon's and from time to time a medium format camera The primary lenses I use are the 24-70 mm and 70-200 mm and those lenses are also used when shooting many other things like sports and editorial for instance

I hear the Hasselblad H3DII-60 is supposed to be good... Oh I guess you mean an entry level DSLR? Try the Nikon D3100, the D5000 or going up a bit, the D90. To be honest what's more important is this kind of photography is quality lenses, like; 50mm f.18 85mm f1.8 24-70mm f2.8 70-200mm f2.8 and off camera lighting (studio flashes or speedlights) - with modifiers - good lighting is crucial to any kind of photography, but especially so in this area.

I would not even consider fashion without a Nikon D700, a 24-70 and two fast primes at least three SB-900 speedlights and some stands, umbrellas and softboxes and a background system. A D3 series or medium format camera would be even better but you'd still need a good lighting setup. Fashion is not easy, it requires absolute control of light and a very good shooting discipline.

Google is amazing: http://www.yourphototips.com/2009/05/26/camera-equipment-for-fashion-photography/ It requires more than passion to do Fashion Photography - it requires know-how. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a professional camera, you should just start off on a basic dSLR for a few hundred dollars. Once you get good at using a camera, you can graduate to something more sophisticated (and expensive)

Answer 5

The camera that suits you may not suit others, so look at the recommendations you have been given then try them out - the professional-level cameras can all be hired at reasonable costs (check the internet/phone directories in your area. There are very few cameras used by professional fashion photographers. The most common are Canon 5d MkII and given that this is (compared to many full frame DSLRs) a relatively inexpensive camera, it is easy to recommend it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Nikon D3 series cameras, either, but if you are really interested in professional fashion, remember that the top agencies will not accept photos shot with most cameras - you need a full frame Nikon or Canon camera...the only current exceptions are Canon 50D 7D and Nikon D300 (check out Getty's minimum requirements). That is not to say you couldn't begin with something simpler and less expensive, But if you are good enough to do this professionally, a full frame Canon or Nikon is what you should be looking at. I have to say, though, that the fact that you are using Answers for this sort of information rather than a dedicated photography site makes me doubt that you are anything like ready. Lighting on the catwalk or the red-carpet is usually on-camera flash with a light modifer - think SB900 for a Nikon system or 580 EX II for Canon - either one is about the same price as an entry level SLR. For all other fashion work, you will need to master lighting - outdoors with diffusers, reflectors and sometimes, portable strobe lighting. Similar gear is required for indoors location shoots (of which you will do a lot) and in the studio you will have to come to terms with reflectors, strobes, gobbos, barn doors, softboxes, ring flash, backgrounds, green screens, flash meters etc. Passion is going to be your greatest asset - but there is a lot to learn, and to get into fashion full time you will be well served by finding a working pro who is willing to take you on as an assistant (the best assistants are in demand and well paid, but don'y expect that - you will be working for experience, contacts and networking, Not money). Good luck.

Right now, what skill level are you at and how much knowledge do you have about photography in general?
