What is the best Canon Lense for portrait photography?

I have a Canon EOS 30D DSLR with 18-35mm lens. I know this is not the best for portrait photography so I was wondering if there are any photographers who could give me a heads up as to what would be a better choice for both head and full body shots. Thanks in advance for the answers. A quick note. The lens is actually 18-55mm.

Answer 1

The 50mm F1.4 would be a good choice. Traditionaly portrait lenses were in the 80-105mm range with a large aperture. Due to the crop factor of 1.6 with your camera the 50mm is the equivalent of an 80mm lens so is a good choice. A 60mm macro lens would also work well. Cost is about $400. If you want something cheaper the the 50mm F1.8 will do very well at $100.

Answer 2

The BEST you could buy is the 85mm f/1.2 L, but I doubt you would be able to afford it!.

Answer 3

To do both head and full body shots with one lens, something along the lines of the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 will do well. Approximately $500, depending on where you get it. A huge beast of a lens! There is a slightly less expensive (and much smaller) 28-70 f/2.8, but depending on how much room you have to work, it may not be wide enough. You could always go to the Canon 24-70L f/2.8, but that is about 3 times the cost.
