What do I have to study in college to get a career in fashion photography?

I want to go on to become a fashion photography and front page editor for fashion magazines. What do I have to study in college, and what do I have to do to achieve this?

That's pretty ambitious, but it can be done. The admittedly tough answer is this: You're probably going to need a bachelor's degree in journalism with minors in photography and business administration. Or take one of those minors and turn it into a second bachelor's degree. Then slug it out working for some sort of publication, starting in the mail room if necessary. Take night classes toward a master's degree while freelance writing articles for some other publication and/or photographing someone else's visionary editorial work, operating on limited sleep, high-test coffee topped off with a shot of espresso (and chased by tons of mints so as to not offend the editors at your day-job). With a healthy dose of luck, unfaltering dedication to the goal, effective networking, a moderate- to long-term suspension of your personal life, and a little butt-kissing, you could be in that treasured position. You might even be able to retire comfortably by the time you're 50...
