I want to start my own photography business. How do I start?

I am going to college. (community college this year, 4 year next year.) I am thinking about nursing school. But I really want to do photography. Photography would be on the side, then possibly full time. Should I go to photography school? What classes should I take? How do I start out in the business? thank you.

picturing your self dear!

Answer 2

Get a minor in business administration or accounting. You need to be skilled at both. You also will need classed in small business and business law. Also you need marketing skills. this is not a seat of your pants career. Plan it well - there are significant startup costs. I think you would need to form a LLC to avoid liability - it is in the long run probably better to pay the extra taxes than take the risk

Answer 3

Before going to photography school, you should take some business classes. Photography is first and foremost a business. You need to understand the basics of small business management before you worry about starting a photography business.

Answer 4

This is something I can relate to. I spent 2 years majoring in photography - finished everything for my degree in fine art photography. I have my own business, and do weddings on the side. However, everyone these days has a camera it is difficult to get very many jobs, or make money at it. My best advice to you would be to not go to photography school - do nursing - and perhaps in the future become a part time nurse and a part time photographer. Volunteer at weddings, for senior portraits, bands, etc. Build up your portfolio, and make yourself different from the average person who owns a nice camera. I was not able to make much with photography, so I am now going into being an EMT. I will still do photography on the side, but you have to be savvy about it. Especially these days. Let me know if you need any advice
