I am thinking about doing a direct mail for a photography business that specializes in architectural and ?

corporate photography. I plan on using a service and mailing out 5,000 6x9 postcards to just business in the boston area. I am spending about 1,400.00 for this mailing. Last year I did a smaller mailing in my local area of only 500 and a smaller card. I had little results. Can I expect better results with my new plan and what other aspects should I consider?

May I suggest you join the PPA (Professional Photographers of America)? They have a wealth of information like this to help photographers in their business. Marketing is one major area and they cover it very well. Cards are less effective than other means of marketing, so I suggest that you take less than $400 of the $1,400 and join them. You will make your money back in short order. Their site is www.ppa.com. You have to be a member to get to the members only area that contains these aids, but you can surf the other areas of the site before becoming a member. You'll find some assistance in the other areas, but the members only area focuses and goes in depth on the issues of photography as a business. Joe Kabanek
