Pick a niche or specialty in the photo business. What do you especially like to photograph? Real estate? Pets? Works of art? Babies/children?
Make a website to display your work, and market like crazy. Being a great marketer is even more important than being a great photographer. Answer 2
It's a tough business to get into nowadays, as everyone with a consumer-level DSLR thinks they're a photographer. No offense to you, that's just how it is.
Marketing is key in this business, as are referrals. Do some portraits for free (and order the prints at cost) and then have those clients spread the word.
Consider your business model too. Are you going to charge a lot for your time and have a very low margin on the prints? Or are you going to not charge much for your time and then make all your money off prints.
Considering that you're just starting out, you may need to structure your business on the second one, as a 17 year old's talent is something that many won't see as worth a lot (again, no offense, it's just the way it is). After you get a good clientele gong you can do things differently, charging for time and having cheap prints (which is the way I structured my photo business). With having things set up that way at least you'll make money if they never call you back to order prints.
Hope this helps. << GO BACK to questions
